A Tribute to Roger Ackerman

It may be a fact that Roger Ackerman was not originally from Sumter – but there is no doubt about my friend Roger’s commitment to this community, his family, his friends, and our Temple. Roger seemed focused all the time – his mind was always going, keeping many notes to follow up on. Recently there have been many articles, including one a few day ago (The Sumter Daily Item), that highlighted a life’s work of achievements. I can mention them all again but the one achievement I am most familiar with is the result of his total dedication and love for Temple Sinai.

Our Temple has a very long history. The members of our Temple over the years have contributed mightily to this community. We all know our current situation as did Roger. As a leader of our Temple Roger tried to address our membership issues but beyond that he looked at the reality of the problem and sought solutions. You may remember the letter he wrote to us all – We need to take our heads out of the sand and deal with the problems that face us – What will happen to our Cemetery and beautiful Temple, with our stain glass windows that could never be replaced, when we are all gone!!!

Those of us remaining are blessed with knowing we – with Roger’s tenacity behind us all – have been the beneficiary of his leadership. The Temple Sinai Jewish History Center is the brainchild of one man – Roger Ackerman. We have partnered with the Sumter County Museum to manage and operate the center. We are so fortunate for this arrangement. We should thank the day Roger proposed the idea to Frank Edwards of the Sumter County Museum. There are many other names at the Sumter County Museum that have played a huge part and every one of them deserve our thanks.

Now would be a wonderful time to remember Roger by pledging funds to the ongoing legacy that has been created. There are plans in the works right now to upgrade the Brody building and integrate it into the Museum. The Brody family donated this space for a Sunday School at the time, but what a wonderful way to use the space to educate ALL to the accomplishments of the Jewish people of Sumter and of course to remember the Holocaust. The Deane and Roger Ackerman Exhibition Hall WILL be done in the coming year. Thank you all!

JHSSC MEETING AT TEMPLE SINAI /WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 20-21/2018

On October 20, 2018 the South Carolina Historical Society met in Sumter. Close to ninety visitors from all over South Carolina came to Sumter for the event. This year the event was focused on those Congregations that were facing depleting numbers and survival. Sumter SC was the chosen destination for the meeting.

The Sumter Congregation was facing declining membership and in 2006 formed a Long-Term Planning Committee. With ten years of hard work the Committee was able to put a plan in place to secure its cemetery and its Temple far into the future. The focus to keep the Temple viable was the creation of the Temple Sinai Jewish History Center. The Center provides information and beautiful displays with information about the Jewish religion, the history and accomplishments of the Jewish people in Sumter and a visual reminder of the Holocaust featuring Sumter’s survivor of the Holocaust---Abe Stern. The center is open to the public Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays with open hours posted. Furthermore, the Center offers Cultural events and educational events also open to the public.

David Sarnat of the Jewish Community Legacy Project gave the opening remarks. He described Congregations all over the country that were dealing with survival issues. The Legacy project consults with these groups to assist with their problems. The Jewish Community Legacy Project has been able to help over seventy-five of these Congregations going forward. “Speakers representing approximately six Congregations in South Carolina gave talks about the status of their Temples and the issues they were facing.

The panel discussions were preceded by a lunch hosted at the Sumter County Museum (below). The evening completed the day at Hamptons Restaurant for dinner.

Sunday Sunday the group moved on to Camden South Carolina. In Camden they toured the Temple Beth El sanctuary and cemetery. This concluded a very successful and educational and entertaining weekend.

“To cultivate generosity directly
Is another fundamental part of living a spiritual life.
Like the training precepts and like our inner meditations,
generosity can actually be practiced.
With patience, its spirit forms our actions, and our hearts will grow stronger and lighter.
t can lead to new levels of letting go and great happiness.”
